Sailing with seabirds in the Aegean Sea
Once more, the Attica Group and the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) have joined forces for the protection of seabirds in the Greek Seas.

The weekly communication through skype with the Fourth Grade pupils of the 2nd Primary School of Pigadia in Karpathos, within the Seabird LIFE Project, resulted in children’s love of rare birds and animals of Karpathos, especially of its seabirds, and in the creation of a play about them.

During this last spring, within the LIFE project framework (2009-2012), HOS fieldwork teams completed the second national Audouin’s Gull (Larus audouinii) population census. This second census, which has covered 90% of the national population, takes place 10 years after the first census, then completed within the framework of another LIFE project entirely targeted on the species.

This year was not a good one in the Northern Aegean Sea neither for the Mediterranean Shag, nor for the fishermen. An algal bloom, which started at the end of 2009, now, at the end of May, it has still not completed its biological cycle, leaving several marine areas in the region still covered with its remains...

In an effort to demonstrate the importance of the Aegean Sea for birds, irrelevant of national border lines, the two BirdLife partners in Greece and Turkey, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) and Doğa Derneği (DD), have decided to join forces and carry out a common project for the regular monitoring of the Yelkouan Shearwaters, along the species migratory route.

The project is implemented by the Hellenic Ornithological Society, in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (ΜΟm), the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the Technological Institution (TEI) of Ionian Islands and the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), with the financial support of the European Commission and the co-financing of the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
