SYSTEMATIC BREEDING BIRD MONITORING SCHEMES

You can participate in the GBBA1 / EBBA2 project through the following monitoring schemes. All these schemes use the 10x10km square. Please visit each link for more information, the methodology to be used, field datasheets and data input files.

You can send your files to atlas@ornithologiki.gr.

1) Timed-effort visits

In Timed-effort visits, participants survey two 2x2km squares from a pre-selected 10x10km square. Each visit must last a minimum of 1.5 hours of effective surveying within the same day during early morning or late afternoon hours.

2) Hellenic Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (HCBM)

Volunteers participating in the HCBM scheme freely select a 10x10km square, within which HOS randomly allocates a 2x2 km square. Counts are then performed from April until June at 15 points within the 2x2km square. Effective surveying lasts approximately 1.5 hours in two separate visits, performed one month apart. Volunteers are asked to make complementary visits in the main habitats of the 10x10km square, sending just a species list with breeding codes and assessment of abundance for the whole 10x10km square.

3) Important Bird Area Caretakers Programme

The Important Bird Area Caretakers Network is a group of people who help monitor IBAs and involve the local community in their conservation. In Greece this voluntary network has been running since 2003. Volunteers monitor the condition of IBAs, following methods developed by BirdLife International for the reliable collection of data, and undertake actions in cooperation with HOS when threats are recorded. HOS trains on an annual basis, those wishing to participate in the network through specialised seminars, so that committed groups of IBA Caretakers are formed all over Greece. IBA Caretakers are able to participate in the GBBA1/EBBA2 project through provision of data on breeding birds.
