Site Description
A coastal wetland with saltmarshes, brackish lagoons, extensive reedbeds ( Phragmites ), sand-dunes, and Pinus forest. Human activities include arable agriculture, stock-raising, fishing, hunting, and recreation.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (15%, Arable land), Forest (17%, Native coniferous woodland), Shrubland (18%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (43%, Coastal lagoons; Fens, transition mires and springs; Salt marshes; Sand dunes and beaches; Standing freshwater)

Land use: agriculture (37%), fisheries/aquaculture (7%), tourism/recreation (20%), urban/industrial/transport (5%), water management (40%)

Part of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Kotychi lagoon, 6309 ha).
3523 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNOTHALASSA KALOGRIAS, DASOS STROFILIAS KAI ELOS LAMIAS, ARAXOS(GR2320001).


Birds
This is an important IBA for passage migrants and breeding and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (wintering), Aythya nyroca (minimum 30 passage individuals), Aquila clanga (wintering), Falco naumanni (passage).

Conservation issues
The main threats are from intensive tourism development, hunting and forest grazing. The shallow lagoons are sensitive to manipulation of the water-levels. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
