Site Description
A deep river valley surrounded by hills with deciduous forest, scrub and grassland. The main human activity is livestock-farming.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (5%, Arable land), Forest (75%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland), Grassland (10%, Dry siliceous grassland), Shrubland (10%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (50%), forestry (50%)

16582 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) KOILADA KOMSATOU(GR1130012).


Birds
This is a very important area for breeding and passage raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (resident), Aegypius monachus (passage), Aquila heliaca (passage).

Conservation issues
The main threats to the site are from deforestation and intensive forest management. Long-term monitoring of raptors is carried out. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
