Site Description
A deep oligotrophic lake with steep western shores. The northern part is shallow with small reedbeds ( Phragmites ).

Habitats: Wetland (100%, Standing freshwater; Water fringe vegetation)

Land use: agriculture, fisheries/aquaculture, water management

Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Petalas/Amfilochias- Kechrinias- Papadatou- Stanou, 13,300ha).

The site is important for wintering ducks and geese.

Conservation issues
The main threat is drainage and the over-abstraction of surface water (`Other' threats). There are plans to construct a road on the lake shore. The area is a candidate SAC.
