Site Description
An area of low mountains predominantly covered by maquis and phrygana with olive groves at lower altitudes. Human activities include livestock-farming and hunting.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (15%, Perennial crops, orchards and groves), Coastline/rocky areas (5%, Scree and boulders), Forest (10%, Broadleaved evergreen woodland; Native coniferous woodland), Shrubland (70%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (80%), not utilised (5%), tourism/recreation (5%), urban/industrial/transport (5%)

Protection status
National Low International Low
575 ha of IBA covered by National Park (Ainos, 2,862 ha). 1,787 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Vouno Atros/Ag. Nikolaou-Porou, 1,787 ha).
2779 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) ETHNIKOS DRYMOS AINOU(GR2220002).
Birds
The site is important for raptors and a range of passerines associated with a mosaic of forest, scrub and agricultural land.

The main threats are from infrastructural developments, hunting and agricultural intensification. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
