Site Description
A mountainous area with scrub and deciduous forests and conifer forest at higher altitudes. A gorge with steep cliffs runs through the centre of the site. Human activities include livestock-farming, hunting, and forestry.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (20%, Inland cliffs; Scree and boulders), Forest (40%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Broadleaved evergreen woodland; Native coniferous woodland; Treeline ecotone), Shrubland (40%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (60%), forestry (10%), not utilised (30%)

Protection status
National Partial International Partial
2,275 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Mesountas, 2,275 ha).
9082 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) KOILADA ACHELOOU(GR2110003).

This is an important site for species characteristic of forest, scrub and open montane habitats.

Conservation issues
A dense road network causes problems of soil erosion and also provides access to the forest for loggers and illegal hunters. Afforestation with Pinus species is a potential threat to the deciduous forest. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
