Site Description
A mountainous area on the border with Albania. At higher altitudes there are extensive areas of alpine pasture and some conifer forests. Lower down, deciduous forest and scrub dominates. Human activities include stock-raising, hunting, and forestry.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (5%, Ruderal land), Coastline/rocky areas (5%, Inland cliffs), Forest (60%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Native coniferous woodland), Grassland (20%, Alpine, subalpine and boreal grassland), Shrubland (20%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (50%), forestry, not utilised

Protection status
National Low International None 1,350ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Panagia- Kourouza- Makralexi/Lavdani- Ag. Marina Pogo, 1,350ha).19906 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) ORI TSAMANTA, FILIATRON, FARMAKOVOUNI, MEGALI RACHI(GR2120009).

This is an important site for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca .

Conservation issues
The main threats are from shooting, the use of poisoned baits, and road construction. In 1997 HOS carried out a survey of Aquila heliaca .
