Site Description
The largest plain in Greece. The site is predominantly arable land and villages. Hills covered with phrygana are included.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (95%, Arable land; Other urban and industrial areas; Perennial crops, orchards and groves), Shrubland (5%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (95%), urban/industrial/transport (5%), water management (95%)

2,300ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Mavrovouni/Agnanteris, 2,300ha).


Birds
The site is important for species found in arable land and holds the largest number of breeding Falco naumanni in Greece.

Conservation issues
The main threat is from agricultural intensification. The demolition of old buildings is a particular threat to Falco naumanni (`Other' threats, above).
