Site Description
The site contains a variety of wetland and drier habitats including riverine and coastal woodland, sand-dunes, lagoons, saltmarsh and freshwater marsh.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (20%, Arable land; Perennial crops, orchards and groves), Forest (10%, Alluvial and very wet forest), Grassland (10%, Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Shrubland (10%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (45%, Coastal lagoons; Sand dunes and beaches; Standing brackish and salt water; Standing freshwater; Tidal rivers and enclosed tidal waters; Water fringe vegetation)

Land use: agriculture (80%), fisheries/aquaculture (20%), tourism/recreation (20%), urban/industrial/transport (5%)

370ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Delta Piniou/Stomiou, 370ha).


Birds
An important site for wintering and passage waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca, Larus audouinii (passage).

Conservation issues
The site is seriously threatened by uncontrolled house construction, drainage and infilling of the wetland, and the destruction of woodland.
