Site Description
Most slopes of Mount Vourinos are covered by grassland or scrub, except for the central valley which has Pinus, Abies and Fagus forests.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (5%, Arable land), Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Inland cliffs), Forest (10%, Alluvial and very wet forest; Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Mixed woodland; Native coniferous woodland), Grassland (30%, Alpine, subalpine and boreal grassland; Dry siliceous grassland; Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Shrubland (40%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis; Scrub)

Land use: agriculture (70%), forestry (10%), nature conservation and research (10%), tourism/recreation (5%)

1,425ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Tservena- Bourinos/Dim. Siatistas- Palaiokastrou, 1,425ha).


Birds
The site is important for raptors and species associated with Mediterranean scrub and grassland.

Conservation issues
Hunting is prohibited on part of the site although poisoning occurs. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
