Site Description
Two eutrophic lakes at the foot of Mount Verno. They are surrounded by extensive reedbeds ( Phragmites ). Beyond the lakes is a mosaic of woodland, pastures and arable fields.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (40%, Arable land), Forest (20%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland), Grassland (13%, Mesophile grasslands), Wetland (24%, Standing freshwater; Water fringe vegetation)
Land use: agriculture (54%), fisheries/aquaculture (24%), forestry (7%)

Protection status
National Partial International Partial
1,750 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Hintsko-Heimadi/Limnohoriou, 3,240 ha).
4064 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNES CHIMADITIDA-ZAZARI(GR1340005).
Birds
This is an important site for species that breed in reedbeds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding), Gallinago media (passage).

Conservation issues
The main threat is increased eutrophication from agricultural run-off as water-levels fall. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
