Site Description
Mounts Tzena and Pinovo form the central part of the Aridaia mountain range. The vegetation comprises extensive broadleaved forests and alpine and subalpine grassland. The site lies adjacent to site 009 in the FYR Macedonia.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (8%, Inland cliffs), Forest (48%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Treeline ecotone), Grassland (32%, Alpine, subalpine and boreal grassland), Shrubland (12%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (20%), forestry (30%), military (10%), not utilised (20%), tourism/recreation (10%), water management (5%)

5,000 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Pinovo-Tzena/Notias, 5,199 ha).
12579 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) ORI TZENA(GR1240002).


Birds
This is an important breeding and foraging site for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca (non-breeding).

Conservation issues
The main threats are from hunting, the afforestation of abandoned cultivation and grassland with plantations of Robinia pseudacacia , and intensified forest management. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
