Site Description
A coastal area of rugged hills and mountains. The site covers the southern part of the peninsula of Agion Oros.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Inland cliffs; Scree and boulders; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Forest (60%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Broadleaved evergreen woodland; Mixed woodland; Native coniferous woodland; Treeline ecotone), Shrubland (40%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis; Scrub)

Land use: forestry (50%), nature conservation and research (20%), not utilised (50%)

12,000ha of IBA covered by World Heritage Site (Mount Athos, 31,000ha).


Birds
This is a nationally important area for breeding and passage raptors. Shearwaters occur offshore. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Falco naumanni , Larus audouinii .

Conservation issues
The main threats are from logging, intensive forest management and a disease that kills Castanea sativa (`Other' threats).
