Site Description
A hilly coastal region dominated at higher altitudes by conifer forest. At lower altitudes there is a mosaic of maquis, small wetlands and olive-groves.

Habitats: Forest (70%, Native coniferous woodland), Sea/marine area (5%, Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (12%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (30%), forestry (70%), tourism/recreation (10%)

Protection status
National Partial International None 8,500ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Dragounteli N. Marmara/Sithonias Sikeas- Sartis, 8,500ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Ktima Karra/N. Marmara, 1,700ha).
Birds
This is an important area for breeding and passage raptors and resident forest species.

Conservation issues
Logging of the Pinus nigra forest is a major threat, particularly to large raptors. Other threats include tourism developments along the coast, spreading urbanization, and hunting. A management plan has existed since 1996. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
