Site Description
A salt lake with large seasonal variations in water level. The lake is surrounded by cereal crops and marsh.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (20%, Arable land), Wetland (80%, Fens, transition mires and springs; Mud flats and sand flats; Salt marshes; Standing brackish and salt water; Water fringe vegetation)
Land use: agriculture (55%), not utilised (35%), tourism/recreation (10%)

Protection status
National None International None 2000 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNI PIKROLIMNI-XILOKERATEA(GR1230004).
Birds
This is an important site for breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds and also for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Pelecanus crispus (non-breeding).

Conservation issues
Threats come from new tourist developments, intensified agriculture and the cutting of reedbeds to provide fodder for livestock (`Other' threats). Circus pygargus nests in the cereal fields but these are usually harvested before fledging. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
