Site Description
The site contains one of the few freshwater lakes in Crete, as well as coastal marshes, a brackish lake, sand-dunes, cliffs and a marine zone.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (20%, Arable land; Other urban and industrial areas), Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Inland cliffs; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Forest (5%, Alluvial and very wet forest), Grassland (5%, Humid grasslands), Shrubland (30%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (35%, Fens, transition mires and springs; Rivers and streams; Salt marshes; Standing freshwater; Tidal rivers and enclosed tidal waters)
Land use: agriculture (60%), tourism/recreation (10%), urban/industrial/transport (10%)

Protection status
National None International None 200 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNI KOURNA KAI EKVOLI ALMYROU(GR4340022).
Birds
This is an important site for breeding, migrant and wintering waterbirds and passerines. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (wintering), Aythya nyroca (wintering), Aquila clanga (passage), Gallinago media (passage, wintering), Larus audouinii (wintering).

Conservation issues
The main threats are from the building of hotels, disturbance from tourists, groundwater abstraction and hunting. There has been a LIFE project investigating protection and management of the site. The site is a candidate SAC.
