Site Description
A rocky peninsula covered with phrygana and other low scrub.
|
|
Habitats: Artificial landscapes (10%, Perennial crops, orchards and groves), Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Grassland (5%, Dry siliceous grassland), Shrubland (70%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (90%), tourism/recreation (5%)

Protection status
National Partial International None 2,300ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Riaka- Piakiendash Ormos Menies/Afraton- Rodopou, 2,300ha).2920 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) CHERSONISOS RODOPOU(GR4340021).
Birds
The area is important for passage migrants and breeding raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering).

Conservation issues
The main threat is from hunting. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
