Site Description
Chalki is a small rocky island with degraded vegetation, in a group of small islets. Alimnia is locally covered by Juniperus and Pinus scrub and also has an area of saltmarsh. Human activities include livestock farming, hunting, tourism, and arable agriculture.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (35%, Inland cliffs; Rock stacks and islets; Scree and boulders; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Grassland (20%, Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Sea/marine area (5%, Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (75%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (Salt marshes; Shingle or stony beaches)
Land use: agriculture (85%), fisheries/aquaculture, not utilised (10%), tourism/recreation (5%), urban/industrial/transport

Protection status
National None International None 2980 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) NISOS CHALKI KAI NISIDES: KOLOFONA, PANO PRASOUDA, TRAGOUSA, STRONGYLI, AGIOS THEODOROS, MAELONISI, ALIMIA, KREVATI, NISAKI(GR4210026).
Birds
This is an important site for species associated with coastal scrub and cliffs.

Conservation issues
The main threats are from very high hunting pressure and overgrazing. Hieraaetus fasciatus are shot and their nests are destroyed. Nestlings of Falco eleonorae are taken for food. More than 6,000 sheep and goats graze on Chalki.
