Site Description
The site lies to the south-east of the island of Astypalea. The islets are dominated by Juniperus scrub and phrygana. Human activities include stock-raising, fishing, and arable agriculture.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (10%, Arable land), Coastline/rocky areas (5%, Rock stacks and islets; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Grassland (8%, Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Sea/marine area (5%, Open Sea; Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (70%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)
Land use: agriculture (90%), fisheries/aquaculture (10%)

Protection status
National None International Partial
1150 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) NISOS SYRNA KAI NISIDES MEGALOS ADELFOS, MIKROS ADELFOS, KATSIKAS, MESONISI, PLAKIDA, STEFANIA, NAVAGIO(GR4210022).
Birds
The area is important for passage migrants and breeding seabirds and raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Larus audouinii (11 breeding pairs).

Conservation issues
Threats include overgrazing, introduced rats and rabbits, abandonment of agriculture, illegal fishing, and hunting. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
