Site Description
An island of sea cliffs and rocky shores, dominated by phrygana and other scrub.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (15%, Arable land; Other urban and industrial areas; Perennial crops, orchards and groves; Ruderal land), Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Rock stacks and islets; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Grassland (20%, Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Sea/marine area (5%, Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (60%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (80%), fisheries/aquaculture (5%), tourism/recreation (10%), urban/industrial/transport (5%)

1600 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) ANATOLIKO TMIMA ASTYPALAIAS KAI NISIDES KOUNOUPOI, FTENO, CHONDROPOULO, KOUTSOMYTIS, MONI, AGIA KYRIAKI, TIGANI, CHONDRI, LIGNO, FOKIONISIA, KATSAGRELI, PONTIKOUSSA, OFIDOUSSA, KTENIA(GR4210021).

The site is important for breeding seabirds.

Conservation issues
Threats include abandonment of agriculture, overgrazing, burning of vegetation, intense shooting, overfishing, urbanization, and potential disturbance to Larus audouinii nests by tourists. Road construction in remote areas is a threat to raptors. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
