Site Description
A mountainous area dissected by deep valleys with extensive alpine grassland, areas of scrub and some forest.

Habitats: Coastline/rocky areas (5%, Inland cliffs), Forest (20%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Broadleaved evergreen woodland; Mixed woodland; Native coniferous woodland; Treeline ecotone), Grassland (30%, Alpine, subalpine and boreal grassland; Steppes and dry calcareous grassland), Shrubland (40%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis)

Land use: agriculture (80%), forestry (20%)

National Partial International None
Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Korilovou- Kallifytou/Dramas, 2,480ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Reserve (Xiropotanou/ Xiropotanou- Petrousas, 2,310ha).


Birds
This is an important area for breeding raptors, forest birds and species characteristic of open grassland.

Conservation issues
The main threat is from industrial expansion around the lower slopes. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
