Site Description
A mountainous island forested in the centre with pine Pinus and oak Quercus . The western side of the island is dominated by maquis, the east by phrygana. There are a number of small coastal wetlands and artificial wetlands. Human activities include livestock-farming, angling, hunting, and tourism.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (20%, Arable land), Coastline/rocky areas (30%, Inland cliffs; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Forest (25%, Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Native coniferous woodland), Sea/marine area (Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (20%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (Rivers and streams; Sand dunes and beaches; Standing brackish and salt water)

Land use: agriculture (50%), fisheries/aquaculture (5%), not utilised (10%), tourism/recreation (20%), urban/industrial/transport (5%), water management (10%)

7800 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) NISOS IKARIA (NOTIODYTIKO TMIMA)(GR4120005).


Birds
The site is important for breeding raptors and passage migrants. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla, Falco naumanni (3- 5 breeding pairs).

Conservation issues
The main threats are the grazing of livestock and the building of new roads. Hunting and tourism are limited. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.

Threats: abandonment/reduction of land management (low), agricultural intensification/expansion (high), deforestation (commercial) (medium), firewood collection (medium), forest grazing (high), infrastructure (medium), selective logging/cutting (medium), unsustainable exploitation (low)
