Site Description
A wetland complex including coastal lagoons, a seasonal brackish marsh, extensive saltmarshes and sandflats and a freshwater marsh with reedbeds ( Phragmites ). Both lakes dry out in late summer. Human activities include arable cultivation, fishing, hunting, and aquaculture.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (30%, Arable land), Grassland (10%, Humid grasslands), Sea/marine area (20%, Sea inlets and coastal features), Wetland (40%, Coastal lagoons; Fens, transition mires and springs; Mud flats and sand flats; Sand dunes and beaches; Standing brackish and salt water; Standing freshwater; Water fringe vegetation)

Land use: agriculture (50%), fisheries/aquaculture (15%), military (8%), not utilised (10%), urban/industrial/transport (5%), water management (15%)

National Partial International Low
Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Komi-Tourles-Chortarolimni/Romanou-Roussopouliou, 950 ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Palaiokastro-Alepotripes-Voutsadika/Panagias-Plaka, 1,200 ha).
1302 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) YGROTOPOI CHORTAROLIMNI KAI ALYKI LIMNOY(GR4110006).


Birds
The site is important for migratory waders and raptors and wintering wildfowl. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (passage).

Conservation issues
Lake Aliki is threatened by plans to convert it to an industrialized saltpan. Other threats include the filling-in of wetland, rubbish dumping (`Other' threats, above) and hunting. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.

Threats: aquaculture/fisheries (low), disturbance to birds (medium), dredging/canalization (high), filling-in of wetlands (high), industrialization/urbanization (high), other (medium), unsustainable exploitation (medium)
