Site Description
The site includes parts of Kithira and the adjacent islets. Human activities include arable agriculture, livestock-farming, tourism, hunting, and fishing. There is also some military use of the site.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (30%, Arable land; Forestry plantations; Perennial crops, orchards and groves; Ruderal land), Coastline/rocky areas (10%, Inland cliffs; Rock stacks and islets; Sea cliffs and rocky shores), Sea/marine area (10%, Open Sea; Sea inlets and coastal features), Shrubland (60%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (Sand dunes and beaches; Shingle or stony beaches)

Land use: agriculture (50%), fisheries/aquaculture (10%), military (5%), tourism/recreation (35%)

National Partial International Low
3,000 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Thalaria Kythiron, 3,000 ha).
8578 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) KYTHIRA KAI GYRO NHSIDES: PRASONISI, DRAGONERA, ANTIDRAGONERA, AVGO, KAPELLO, KOUFO KAI FIDONISI(GR3000013).


Birds
Two hundred and thirty-six species have been recorded. The site is a migratory bottleneck, where more than 3,000 raptors regularly pass in autumn. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca (up to 2 wintering individuals), Falco naumanni (passage) .

Conservation issues
Threats come from uncontrolled grazing, fire, and land reclamation for building. Hunting is also a threat, particularly during autumn. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
