Site Description
An eutrophic freshwater lake largely covered by reed Phragmites . In recent years the lake has been almost completely drained.

Habitats: Artificial landscapes (20%, Arable land), Shrubland (60%, Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis), Wetland (20%, Standing freshwater; Water fringe vegetation)

Land use: agriculture (80%), water management (20%)

Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Argriro- Pr. Hlias- Panagia/Aliveriou- Argirou- Pras, 5,440ha).2600 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) LIMNI DYSTOS(GR2420008).


Birds
This is an important area for breeding herons. Breeding birds include nine of the 21 species in Europe that are restricted (when breeding) to the Mediterranean biome.

Conservation issues
The main threat is continued abstraction of water for industry and agriculture that threatens the lake with complete drainage. Another serious threat is the planned construction of two wind-farms in the hills surrounding the site.
