Site Description
A small coastal wetland near Istiea, fed by freshwater springs and streams, with two lagoons, and riverine forest.
|
|
Habitats: Artificial landscapes (Arable land; Ruderal land), Forest (Alluvial and very wet forest), Grassland (9%, Humid grasslands), Sea/marine area (44%, Open Sea), Wetland (45%, Coastal lagoons; Fens, transition mires and springs; Sand dunes and beaches; Water fringe vegetation)
Land use: agriculture (22%), fisheries/aquaculture (62%), tourism/recreation (11%), urban/industrial/transport (5%)

Protection status
National Low International None 1ha of IBA covered by Natural Monument (Istiaia Remnant of Swamp-forest, 1ha).450 ha of the IBA are covered by Special Protection Area (SPA) MEGALO & MIKRO LIVARI-DELTA XIRIA(GR2420007).
Birds
This is an important site for passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (6- 10 passage individuals), Falco naumanni (passage).

Conservation issues
The main threats are illegal building of holiday houses, dredging and infilling at Livari, expansion of arable land, logging of the alluvial forest, hunting, and grazing pressure. The area is a candidate SAC.
