Birds of Antikythira

From the 223 species of birds recorded in Antikythira, 212 are passage migrants and only 11 have breeding populations in the island. These are Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar), Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis), Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae), Peregrine (Falco peregrinus), Barn Owl (Tyto alba), Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius), Raven (Corvus corax), Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala) and Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis).

Besides these, a number of very rare species for Greece have been recorded in Antikythira. These are:

  • Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis)
  • Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis)
  • Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug)
  • Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus)
  • Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica)
  • Western Olivaceous Warbler (Iduna opaca)
  • Melodious Warbler (Hippolais polyglotta)
  • Green Warbler (Phylloscopus nitidus)
  • Yellow-Browed Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus)
  • Western Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli)
  • Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus)
  • Scarlet Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus)
  • Little Bunting (Emberiza pusilla)
